i carry your heart with me ( i carry it in my heart)

If anyone were to ask me why they should choose a celebrant to conduct their wedding, the poem in the title of this poem by e.e. cummings would be part of my answer. At uni I studied English with American Studies. I had intended to study English with History but I changed in the first semester because with American History , I could incorporate Black history and American Literature. This is where I came across e.e.cummings. I carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) Being a romantic it took my breath away and I vowed if ever I got married this would be part of my ceremony. 20 years later I got married in church. I figured my Mum had waited so long to get shot of me I would do something to make her happy. Don't get me wrong , it was a lovely wedding. But getting married in church or a registry office can limit your ability to make the day your own. Churches and registry offices have scripts they have to adhere to, celebrants can help you make the day your own. If I were to do it again I would involve more or my family and friends . I would get them to read poetry, do readings and perform rituals.

' I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) I am never without it (anywhere I go you go , my dear and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling) I fear

no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet).................. I carry your heart ( I carry it in my heart)

What poem would you have at your ceremony?
